As the third term draws to a close at the Light of Hope School, all learners were involved in completing projects as part of their formal assessments.
The grade 4 to 7 learners enjoyed the challenge of making hydraulic and electromagnetic cranes using syringes, tubing and recyclable waste as part of the design and technology curriculum. These projects taught them a great deal about planning, problem solving and reasoning. We are so impressed by what they produced and the creativity that was shown. Clearly, they are engineers in the making!
The grade 1 to 3 learners made their own chequered game boards and learnt how to play Checkers. There’s a lot to be learnt by active participation in projects, from planning and problem solving to measuring and using other mathematical concepts. And when playing their game, they are understanding winning and losing, and of course, are having fun.
Our term ended with a highly anticipated excursion to the Monte Casino Bird Park. To prepare for this visit, all learners made bird feeders for our school garden using recycled materials. This was a true test of design, planning and creativity, resulting the most incredible bird feeders. Then came the fun task of climbing to hang all the feeders from trees, tall bushes and whatever suitable places they could find.
The excursion to the bird park was very exciting and a lot of fun was had by all. From feeding the ducks to walking inside the aviary with the various birds, a fascinating bird show with vultures, owls and more beautiful characters showing off their colours and personalities, talking with bright parrots and much more, the learners had the best day and ended the term with plenty smiles all around.
